Practicum Guidelines
Practicum
Requirements
This includes
responsibilities at the practicum site as well as on the university
campus.
In accordance with the Counselling
Program requirements, all students will complete 500 hours of supervised
practicum experience. Students will spend a minimum of 200 hours in
direct client contact.
In sites that also provide group work,
students are expected to spend a minimum of 40 hours in group work. This
requirement is not expected at sites where there is no group work. In
this case, students will make alternative arrangements to fulfill this
requirement.
During the practicum:
a) Students will provide direct service
to clients, including individual counselling and where applicable, group
counselling;
b) For the first 100 hours, students will
receive one hour per week for five weeks of individual and/or joint (two
students and one supervisor) supervision from their University
Supervisor; and
c) Students will attend an average of
three hours per week of group supervision based on readings, individual
supervisions and case studies that are provided on a regular schedule
over the course of the student's practicum by a program faculty
member or a supervisor under the supervision of a program faculty
member.
