In 1848, the Dutch-controlled portion of Borneo was divided into two administrative territories (residencies): the Southern and Eastern Department (Dutch: Zuid- en Oost-Afdeling) and the Western Department (Dutch: Wester-Afdeling). The administrative seat of the latter was Pontianak. Such administrative units were headed by an assistant resident.
