On 1 January 2021 the communes of Bagnes and Vollèges merged to the new commune of Val de Bagnes (see below).
From the website notrehistoire.ch (in French):
This vast municipality, which occupies almost the entire Bagnes valley, was first mentioned in 1150 under the name Banies (from the Latin Balnea: baths). Its name likely refers to the sulphurous baths already known to the Romans and which were very popular in the Middle Ages until they were buried by a massive rockslide in 1545. The coat of arms of Bagnes, which depicts these medieval baths, is known as a "canting" coat of arms. The oldest heraldic documents are the thaler of 1498 and Stumpf's Chronicle of 1548.

This flag is canting, because "to bath" is baigner in French.
