ACER has a long history of community outreach, both directly and through the
numerous community organizations of which it is a member. Direct community
outreach activities include acting as scientific advisors to numerous groups
involved in water quality monitoring projects. Examples are the
Clean Annapolis River Project, the
Kings County Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program and Friends of the Cornwallis
River. Support to these groups includes development of monitoring protocols and
manuals, providing training workshops, and analysis and interpretation of the
data collected.
Other outreach activities are carried out through the various community
organizations to which ACER belongs. Notable among these is the
Bay of Fundy
Ecosystem Partnership and one of its working groups, the
Minas Basin
Working Group. A major objective of the Minas Basin Working
Groups is to develop and integrated watershed based management plan
to ensure the sustainable use of the Basin's marine resources. Over
the last several years this group has organized numerous public
forums around the Minas Basin watershed to determine the
environmental issues of most concern and the actions required to
address these concerns.
