NSERC Awards

Jennifer Smith was awarded a two year Industrial Post-Graduate Scholarship from the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada

Both Holly Lightfoot and Kelly Moores were awarded undergraduate summer research awards from the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada.

Congratulations!!

Canadian Botanical Association

The Annual Meeting of the Canadian Botanical Association was hosted by Acadia University in May of 2009. Members of the Acadia Plant Ecology laboratory were involved in organizing and hosting the meeting which was attended by over 90 botanists from across Canada.

Both Holly Lightfoot and Jennifer Smith from our laboratory presented posters at the meeting.

Jennifer Smith was awarded the Iain and Sylvia Taylor Award for the best student poster presentation. Congratulations Jennifer!!

The conference included a field trip to Cape Split to observe the early spring flora that was attended by several members of our laboratory. From left to right, Andrew Nette, Kelly Moores, Leanne Easson, and Sarah MacArthur on the Cape Split field trip.

Li-Cor Environmental Education Fund

Four students from our laboratory (Sarah MacArthur, Kelly Moores, Andrew Nette and Leanne Easson) were involved in a successful application to the Li-Cor Environmental Education Fund (LEEF). The LEEF program provides grants to primarily undergraduate universities in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada to purchase modern research grade equipment for student education and research. This particular grant provides $40,000 towards the purchase of an instrument that can be used to measure photosynthesis, respiration, chlorophyll fluorescence, transpiration and stomatal conductance.  It will be used in several of Acadia's undergraduate courses. Students in both the Biology and Environmental Science programs will benefit from this equipment. The equipment will also be useful in a wide variety of different student research projects. Congratulations on your successful grant application!!
