Student Olympians Tackle Physics at Acadia



(Wolfville, N.S.) -- This Friday, more than 100 students from Annapolis Valley high schools will participate in a different kind of Olympics. Although it’s held in War Memorial Gymnasium, the Acadia Physics Olympics offers participants a full day of mental activities and hands-on challenges that focus on the science of Physics.

The event is co-hosted by Acadia University and the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board (AVRSB), and 2009 marks the fourth-year of competition.

Who:  Over 100 Grade 10, 11 and 12 high school students from the AVRSB (divided into teams mixed between schools and grade levels), around 20 volunteers from the AVRSB and Acadia.

What:  The Fourth Annual Physics Olympics event, co-hosted by Acadia and the AVRSB. 

Challenges/Activities:

  • “Fun with Lenses" - Being able to see an eye chart from across the gym using a series of mixed lenses.
  • "Balancing Act" - Determining an unknown mass value using the principles of balance and torque.
  • "Catapult" - Hitting a target with a marble using a catapult setup that the students need to calibrate.
  • "Paper Tower" - Building a tall tower that will hold up to 50 kg of mass using only two sheets of regular paper.
  • "Rube Goldberg" - Building a complicated machine to complete a simple task using as many steps as possible using up to 40 everyday objects.
  • "Pringle Challenge" - Make a package to mail/post a single Pringles potato chip safely without breaking the chip.  The package should be as small and as light as possible.

When:  Friday, May 1, 2009 from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Where:  Acadia War Memorial Gymnasium
