University marks the 125-year anniversary of first female graduate.
(Wolfville, N.S.) -- Acadia University will award more than 800 degrees during Spring Convocation on May 10 and 11 in Convocation Hall. Students will graduate from the faculties of Arts, Pure and Applied Science, Professional Studies, and Theology.
The Acadia University President’s Award for Entrepreneurship will also be presented to Middleton resident Shae Griffith, owner of four businesses and a supporter of community and educational entrepreneurship.
During the convocation ceremonies, Acadia will mark the 125th year since it granted a degree to its first woman graduate, Clara Bell Marshall. Marshall was the second woman in the Commonwealth to obtain a degree. In honour of that occasion, all of the honorary degree recipients will be women.
Each of the four honourees has made outstanding contributions to society: singer Measha Brueggergosman, community builder and educator Edith Cromwell, nutritionist and author Susie Langley (’61), and Baptist educator Dr. Lois Mitchell.
Convocation will proceed as follows:
Sunday, May 10
3 p.m. Faculty of Arts, and Faculty of Theology - During this ceremony a Doctor of Music will be presented to Measha Brueggergosman, who will address the graduating class. Also on Sunday, Dr. Lois Mitchell will receive a Doctor of Divinity.
Monday, May 11
10 a.m. Faculty of Pure and Applied Science - During the morning ceremony a Doctor of Science will be presented to Susie Langley (’61), who will also provide the Convocation address.
2:30 p.m. Faculty of Professional Studies - Edith Cromwell will be awarded a Doctor of Civil Laws during this ceremony. Acadia Recreation Management professor Dr. Brenda Roberston will address the graduating class.
