(Wolfville,
NS) - Acadia University President and
Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Gail Dinter-Gottlieb, today announced that Dr.
George Iwama will become Acadia’s Acting Vice-President Academic
beginning October 1, 2006. Dr. Iwama, Acadia’s Dean of Science,
replaces Dr. Ralph Nilson, who will leave Acadia at the end of
December to become President of Malaspina University College in
Nanaimo, BC.
Dr. Iwama will be
assisted in his role by Acadia’s Dean of Professional Studies, Dr.
William McLeod and Dean of Arts, Dr. Bob Perrins. Dr. McLeod will
assist with budgeting and financial matters, while Dr. Perrins will
assume responsibility for the new Learning Commons and for
implementing Acadia’s Academic Strategic Plan. Dr. Perrins will also
be asked to bring forward recommendations regarding Acadia’s Office
of Research and Graduate Studies.
“A mid-year transition
is always difficult, but we are fortunate to have academic Deans
with administrative and strategic strengths who together can provide
Acadia with the academic leadership it requires,” said Dr.
Dinter-Gottlieb. “I know Dr. Iwama will maintain the focus we have
on celebrating and promoting the academic achievements of our highly
respected faculty and talented students. The support he will receive
from Drs. McLeod and Perrins will ensure the momentum behind several
important academic initiatives will be maintained.”
Prior to his departure
at the end of the year, Dr. Nilson will complete his work on the
implementation phase of the Academic Strategic Plan. He will also be
working on an initiative that will leverage Acadia’s considerable
capacity for undergraduate research, a unique part of the
University’s academic program.
“The search for
Acadia’s next Vice-President Academic will begin immediately,” said
Dr. Dinter-Gottlieb. “There are a number of exciting challenges
ahead of us, and we will want to find a new Vice-President who will
be ready in time for the beginning of the next academic year.”
