(Wolfville,
NS) - Acadia University President, Dr. Gail
Dinter-Gottlieb, and Michael, Jane and Jennifer Wilson, today
announced the new Wilson Family Scholarship available to a student
from Tantramar Regional High School in Sackville, New Brunswick who
chooses to attend Acadia. Tantramar High Principal, Don McCormick,
and approximately 100 senior students joined Dr. Gottlieb and the
Wilson family at today’s announcement.
The Tantramar
Scholarship, made possible by the generosity of the Wilson family,
will be awarded this year and in perpetuity to a deserving student
who intends to study at Acadia, with preference given to the areas
of engineering, physics, mathematics, business or general science.
$8,000 for year one, currently representing the full first year’s
tuition, and a renewable component of $5,000 per year for years two,
three and four, will be accompanied by a university room in
residence each year, for a total value of more than $40,000 toward
the full cost of attending Acadia. The Tantramar Scholarship is
among the top one percent of all scholarships offered at the
University. “Both of our children, Jennifer and Riley, have grown
tremendously as a result of their experiences at an excellent
university a little farther from home. Our hope is that this
scholarship will allow other outstanding Tantramar graduates to have
that same opportunity,” said Mr. Wilson.
“We are grateful to
the members of the Wilson family for their commitment to the
students of Tantramar Regional High School and, of course, for their
selection of Acadia as the university of choice for this
scholarship,” said President Gottlieb. “We have had more than 40
students from Tantramar attend Acadia throughout this past decade
and they have been well-prepared for university. This scholarship
will enable one more outstanding applicant each year to take cost
concerns out of the decision. Tantramar graduates are wanted by all
universities and we are pleased to be enrolling more than our fair
share of them.”
The Tantramar
Scholarship recipient will be enrolled in university-preparatory
courses, be instinctively entrepreneurial in spirit, involved in
community activity, and have clearly demonstrated a potential to
contribute to the life and work of the university. “These are the
characteristics of John and Anne Wilson, Michael’s parents, and to
whom this scholarship is dedicated,” said Harvey Gilmour, Acadia’s
Vice-President Alumni and Development, a personal friend of both.
