(Wolfville,
NS) - The Sensory Motor Instructional Leadership
Experience program (S.M.I.L.E) at Acadia University has received a
gift of $10,000 US from the Macquarie Bank Foundation of Sydney,
Australia. S.M.I.L.E is only the second Canadian organization to
benefit from a donation from the Macquarie Foundation.
“The Macquarie Bank
Foundation chose the S.M.I.L.E program as a candidate for a
Foundation donation because of the university-community
involvement,” said Brian Gay, Vice-President of Macquarie Capital
Canada. “Macquarie's goal is to support community programs and
initiatives, and the S.M.I.L.E program was an excellent candidate.
S.M.I.L.E is unique because its participants are from both the
Wolfville and Acadia communities, a great example of how university
students can assist the community at large.”
S.M.I.L.E. provides an
environment of play and fun that fosters fundamental motor
development for children and youth with varying ability levels. The
program also helps Acadia University students who volunteer develop
leadership skills that leads to a lifetime of success. The donation
by Macquarie will help these volunteers as they work with the
children.
“The program will
celebrate its twenty-fifth anniversary next year and, unfortunately,
most of the equipment we are presently using is that old,” says
Roxanne Seaman, Director of S.M.I.L.E. and lecturer in the School of
Recreation Management and Kinesiology at Acadia. “This generous
donation will go a long way in purchasing much needed equipment for
the child participants of S.M.I.L.E.”
