(Wolfville, NS) - The
Rotary Club of Wolfville has launched a new fundraising lottery that
will support Rotary International’s work in developing countries.
The $100 RotarAXE Draw tickets will provide purchasers with the
opportunity to win a one-year tuition waiver from long-time Rotary
partner Acadia University, one of Canada’s leading undergraduate
institutions. The draw will take place March 29, 2007 in Wolfville.
The tuition waiver is
good for three years beginning in September 2007 and can be used by
the winner or transferred to anyone he or she chooses to support.
Acadia’s academic qualifications will need to be met by anyone using
the tuition waiver. The Rotary Club of Wolfville will operate this
lottery annually for each of the next five years. It will be joined
in its promotion of this unique lottery by the local chapters of
Rotaract, a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women
ages 18 to 30 and World University Services of Canada, a network of
individuals and post-secondary institutions who believe that all
peoples are entitled to the knowledge and skills necessary to
contribute to a more equitable world. Its mission is to foster human
development and global understanding through education and training.
Ticket sale proceeds
will be used to establish an endowment fund that will support work
by an Acadia student in any one of the many developing countries
targeted by Rotary International. Acadia students interested in
international work will be asked to make an application for funding
and each year, one successful applicant will be chosen. The fund
will cover travel costs to and from the project as well as other
associated costs. Upon their return, the student will be asked to
make a presentation on his or her work. The fund can also be used to
support the WUSC student refugee program.
“This is an exciting
new project and we are grateful for the support we’ve received from
Acadia,” said Rotary Club of Wolfville Draw Committee Chair, John
Baillie. “Rotary International’s work in developing countries is a
priority and Acadia’s significant international student population
means we have a partner in this venture that shares our enthusiasm
for education and community development.”
“Acadia is pleased to
partner with members of our local Rotary Club as well as Rotary
International, Rotaract and WUSC on this outstanding global
development initiative,” said Paula Cook MacKinnon, Vice-President
Student Affairs for Acadia University. “Several Acadia students and
professors are involved with projects in developing countries and
this provides students with a wonderful learning opportunity. We’re
all pleased, through Rotary, to offer a new student the chance to
study at Acadia and one of our current students the opportunity to
expand their knowledge and skills.”
