Canada’s Silken Laumann and astronaut Colonel Chris Hadfield to speak at Building Bridges 2006 conference

(Wolfville, NS) - Acadia University and Dalhousie University will co-host Building Bridges 2006, a conference on research and the promotion of health and wellness in Canada. This joint conference of the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology and the Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology takes place November 1 to 4 at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront at 1919 Upper Water Street, Halifax, NS. Silken Laumann and astronaut Colonel Chris Hadfield will be giving keynote addresses.

Participants of Building Bridges 2006 will take part in free communications and addresses by some of Canada's top researchers and proponents of physical activity. Researchers, professionals, students, practitioners, community members and business people from different fields will discuss how to address some of the problems of inactivity in society from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Laumann, one of Canada’s most highly recognized athletes and an ambassador to millions of children across the world, will speak to the 500 delegates on her Active Kids movement, a national charity dedicated to increasing physical activity in children. Astronaut Colonel Hadfield will talk about the experiences and challenges he faced with research and movement in space.

Additional symposia will highlight physical activity promotion initiatives across Canada, physical activity promotion in the elderly, and will highlight high performance sport as an application of physical endeavor. Each society will also have their own scholarly programs and address issues in exercise physiology, exercise psychology and psychomotor behaviour.

In conjunction with the conference, the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology's Health and Fitness Program will also be launching the release of two new certifications—the CSEP Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) and the CSEP Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP). These certifications were developed to ensure that quality fitness practices and physical activity counseling services are available to assist in the promotion of an active lifestyle for all Canadians. During the conference approximately 100 fitness professionals will be certified as CSEP Personal Trainers and Exercise Physiologists, to assist with the promotion of fitness and physical activity across Canada.
