(Wolfville,
NS) - Acadia University kicked off Homecoming Weekend by
honouring a record 57 varsity athletes who achieved Academic
All-Canadian standing last year. To achieve this national
distinction from Canadian Interuniversity Sport, athletes must
maintain a minimum average of 80 per cent.
At Acadia, almost one
in every three of its eligible athletes is an Academic All-Canadian.
In addition, varsity athletes completed an average of 30.3 credit
hours, more than what is considered a normal course load. Three
Academic All-Canadians had a grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 and
altogether, 12 athletes had a GPA of 3.9 or higher. The highest
average was 97.8 per cent and every one of Acadia’s eight varsity
sports teams had multiple award winners.
“Acadia’s varsity
athletes are high performers on and off their field of play,” said
Dr. Gail Dinter-Gottlieb, Acadia’s President and Vice-Chancellor.
“But what is even more impressive is the amount of time our athletes
dedicate to community activities from working with children to
fundraising for charitable causes. Our athletes are some of the most
visible members of the Acadia community and we are proud of the hard
work they do and congratulate them for receiving this national
honour.”
The Academic
All-Canadian breakfast was held at the beginning of Acadia’s
Homecoming Weekend. Other activities include the Friday afternoon
launch of a major capital campaign, followed by Saturday’s
Convocation Ceremonies, the Annual Homecoming Parade and football
game. Saturday evening features the Acadia Women in Sport Dinner and
Award Ceremony.
During Convocation,
Acadia will award approximately 200 degrees to members of its Class
of 2006. Dr. Jack Clark of St. John’s will be awarded an Honorary
Doctor of Science degree for his outstanding lifetime contribution
to geotechnical engineering. Dr. Paul Kinsman, a recently retired
family physician and former Mayor of Wolfville, will be awarded the
Acadia University Community Service Award. The Honourable Karen
Casey, Minister of Education for the Province of Nova Scotia, will
deliver the convocation address.
