(Wolfville,
NS) - On Friday, December 9th at 1 p.m. in
the Garden Room, K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre,
Acadia University will celebrate the publication of Tales of the
Monkey King by Acadia writer-in-residence Benjamín Santamaría.
Benjamín has worked
tirelessly to save the street children of Mexico. While living
there, he worked with these children, and each night, shared with
them the inspirational and reassuring story of the Monkey King. Now
living in Canada, Benjamín is committed to sharing the story, both
of the Monkey King, and of the plight of the street children of
Mexico, with North American readers.
During the
celebration, guests will learn about the relevance of Benjamín’s
work and hear a short reading. Copies of Tales of the Monkey King
will be available for sale on-site. A reception will follow.
Tales of the Monkey
King was published by Tundra Books of Toronto on November 8th,
2005. The 32-page picture book is appropriate for children ages 6 to
8. Benjamín Santamaría is Acadia’s first writer-in-residence under
the Scholar at Risk program promoted by PEN Canada. The program is
designed to host writers in exile like Benjamín who have been
compelled to leave their homeland because they were not able to
write freely.
