NS) - Acadia University’s K.C. Irving
Environmental Science Centre and Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens
has been recognized as an outstanding traditional architectural
design by the 2005 Palladio Awards of New York. The Centre’s design
team from Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York was named the
winner in the “New Buildings over 30,000 square feet” category.
The fourth annual Palladio design competition recognized 10
architectural firms for outstanding work in traditional design for
commercial, institutional and residential projects. The K.C. Irving
Science Centre and Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens was the only
Canadian facility chosen.
The K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre is a landmark 65,000
square foot building with more than six acres of botanical gardens.
Its purpose is for the study of the natural environment,
concentrating on the ecology and native flora of the Acadia region.
The building contains state-of-the-art research laboratories,
greenhouses, a conservatory, an auditorium, classrooms, conference
meeting facilities, and a spectacular Garden Room which serves as a
meeting place.
The K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre and Harriet Irving
Botanical Gardens officially opened in September 2002. The facility
and gardens were a gift to Acadia University fully funded by
Acadia’s Chancellor Arthur Irving, his brothers James and John
Irving, and their families.
