NS) - Acadia University today announced that Dr. Ralph
Nilson will assume the role of Vice-President Academic and Dr.
George Iwama the position of Dean of Pure & Applied Science.
“Both Dr. Nilson and
Dr. Iwama were attracted to Acadia because of the prospect of
working with an accomplished faculty that deserves credit for
Acadia’s established reputation as one of Canada’s finest
undergraduate institutions,” said Dr. Gail Dinter-Gottlieb,
President of Acadia University. “I know they are both excited about
the opportunities they will have to work with faculty, students and
the broader Acadia community.”
Dr. Nilson, who will
join the Acadia community on July 1, has a distinguished record of
academic and administrative achievement. Most recently he served as
Director of the Indigenous Peoples Health Research Centre at the
First Nations University of Canada and Professor in the Faculty of
Kinesiology and Health Studies at the University of Regina. Dr.
Nilson has also held additional positions at the University of
Regina including Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology & Health
Studies, and the Faculty of Physical Activity Studies.
With grants from the
Natural Resources Canada, Sask Lotteries, Saskatchewan Health
Research Foundation (SHRF), and Canadian Institutes of Health
Research, Dr. Nilson has conducted research in the areas of climate
change and health, indigenous peoples’ health, and aboriginal
leadership development in sport and recreation.
Dr. George Iwama will commence his position as Dean of Pure and
Applied Science on August 1st. Dr. Iwama comes to Acadia from his
most recent position as Director General of the National Research
Council Institute for Marine Biosciences in Halifax, as well as the
Director General responsible for the new NRC Institute for
Nutrisciences and Health in Charlottetown, PEI.
Dr. Iwama is active on many boards and committees for the promotion
of the life sciences in our region, including the Discovery Centre,
the Life Sciences Development Association (LSDA), the Greater
Halifax Partnership, and the Premier's Advisory Council on
Technology and Innovation. Dr. Iwama was the co-founder of the LSDA,
and has been a founding member of two Networks of Centres of
Excellence, AquaNet and the Canadian Bacterial Diseases Network. He
is also an active researcher with more than 115 peer-reviewed
publications and two edited books to date.
