Acadia Faculty Agreement Ratified:

Students return to Classes

For Release:  March 11, 2004

(Wolfville, NS) -  Classes resumed today for Acadia’s 3,900 students as the Acadia University Board of Governors and the Acadia University Faculty Association signed a new four-year collective agreement that will be in place through the 2007 academic year.

“This is an important agreement for Acadia because it addresses a number of long-standing concerns with previous collective agreement language and establishes a process for the Board and Faculty Association to jointly review issues such as benefits and faculty intellectual property rights. I congratulate both negotiating teams for their determination to make improvements that will benefit students, faculty and Acadia’s reputation as a leading undergraduate university,” said Dr. Gail Dinter-Gottlieb, Acadia’s President and Vice-Chancellor.

“We are pleased with the new agreement as it establishes the principles of fairness and equity which will govern future relations between the Board and the Faculty Association. This agreement also makes significant improvements in rights and working conditions which will enable us to attain our goal of recruiting and retaining the best qualified faculty and students. I applaud the efforts of both teams and congratulate them on their commitment to Acadia's future," said Dr. Janice Best, President of the Acadia University Faculty Association.

The agreement is retroactive to July 1, 2003 and will expire June 30, 2007. It includes better family leave benefits, important changes to faculty workload, an increase to faculty salaries and combines Acadia’s full and part-time faculty into a single bargaining unit
