Acadia increases course accessibility for seniors

Lifelong Learning Centre reduces rates for audit courses

(Wolfville, NS) -   Acadia University today announced a significant reduction to its fees for seniors to audit credit courses through the Acadia Lifelong Learning Centre, part of the University’s Continuing and Distance Education program.

“This price reduction creates an excellent opportunity for senior adults to pursue their academic interests and become involved in a university setting,” says Dr. Gail Dinter-Gottlieb, president of Acadia University. “We’re thrilled to be able to offer these stimulating courses and seminars to this important group in our local community.”

The Acadia Lifelong Learning (ALL) Centre was established in 2000 as a way of sharing the intellectual and cultural resources of Acadia University with the growing population of senior adults. Courses currently offered are non-credit and are provided on campus and at community locations. The new audit program gives seniors access to select university-credit courses on an audit basis at a significantly reduced rate.

“Auditing courses is another way that the ALL Centre is improving the mental and physical health of older adults,” says Mike Sweeney, Chair of the Board of the ALL Centre. Dr. Nancy Van Wagoner, Director of Continuing and Distance Education, concurs. “We’re happy to continually find ways to build bridges with the community.”

Each individual who registers as a member of the ALL Centre receives several advantages, including discounted course fees, free lectures, participation in special events, electronic lists of events, and Acadia community announcements. Courses start the week of July 5 and July 26 and include subjects in business, English, sociology, nutrition and philosophy. Fall and winter courses will also be available. Members of the ALL Centre who are 60 and older will be able to audit an Acadia credit course for a special fee of $180. Non-members, ages 60 and up, may audit courses for $195.

For more information, visit http://conted.acadiau.ca and follow the links to the ALL Centre. Or call Continuing and Distance Education at 902-585-1434 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Enrolment for students auditing a course is pending availability of space in the desired course. The deadline for registration is June 30, 2004.
