Acadia University and its Associated Alumni celebrate renewed relationship

For Release:  October 27, 2003

(Wolfville, NS) -  Acadia University and the Associated Alumni of Acadia University (AAAU) solidified their growing working relationship with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday, October 21.

"This renewed working relationship has been developing over the last several months and has culminated in Tuesday's signing. I look forward to building a partnership governed by trust and goodwill," said Dr. Gail Dinter-Gottlieb, President and Vice-Chancellor Acadia University.

Representatives from Acadia and the AAAU have worked enthusiastically on several joint projects over the last year. Important initiatives have included the establishment of a communications committee for the Acadia Bulletin magazine, organizing the Acadia Alumni Gala Dinner in Halifax and the Residence Room Naming fundraising campaign.

"It is so satisfying to be moving forward. It is a time of good news for Acadia and its alumni," said Gordon Proudfoot, President Associated Alumni of Acadia University.

The renewed relationship between Acadia and the AAAU is the result of the hard work of a volunteer alumni group called 'Friends of Acadia.' Acadia is unique in that its Alumni Association is a separately incorporated body. This dedicated group, which organized in 2001, assumed a leadership role in the Associated Alumni with the hope of more open communication with the University. Their work culminated in the signing of the MOU last week.

"I have never seen such a dedicated group as the 'Friends of Acadia.' This self-starter group of Acadia grads has encouraged the most positive spirit," said Gordon Proudfoot.

Some overriding principles of the memorandum include: collaborating in the best interest of Acadia, focusing on initiatives that serve to advance the reputation of Acadia, enhancing opportunities for fundraising, and promoting Acadia as an institution of choice to prospective students. The document confirms that the AAAU, through its incorporation, is a separate autonomous body.

The University and the AAAU are excited about new collaborative initiatives which include the revitalization of the alumni branches and an annual fundraising campaign focused on providing increased financial assistance for students.
