Acadia
University to purchase life saving equipment to aid Wolfville Fire
Fighters
For Release: February 6, 2003
(Wolfville,
NS) - Acadia has demonstrated its continued support for
the community with the announcement of funding for the Wolfville
Fire Service to purchase Thermal Imaging equipment. The funding was
announced during a February 4th meeting between the Wolfville town
council and Acadia's senior administration. In addition to equipment
costs, the University will support the training of ten fire fighters
in the operation of this state of the art equipment.
"At Acadia we utilize
technology in every aspect of campus life and I feel by providing
this technologically advanced equipment and training for our
volunteer fire fighters, we are taking an important step to ensuring
the safety and welfare of our students and the people of Wolfville
and surrounding areas," said Dr. Kelvin Ogilvie, Acadia's President
& Vice-Chancellor.
In receiving this gift
from Acadia, Wolfville Mayor Robert Stead commented that "at a time
when capital funds for new fire department equipment are difficult
to raise, this piece of life saving equipment and the training of
ten department members in its use is an incredible boost for the
town and the fire department."
Thermal Imaging
equipment is used by fire fighters to locate people trapped in
burning structures, or to identify hotspots, sources of heat, hidden
from normal vision. Wolfville Fire Chief Tim MacLeod notes, "Thermal
Imaging equipment is fast becoming an important tool in fire
safety." By using Infrared frequencies, these devices enable fire
fighters to see through smoke, drastically cutting down search time
and increasing the chances for rescue.
