Acadia
Faculty Association and University reach tentative agreement
For Release: July 11, 2003
(Wolfville,
NS) - A tentative agreement was reached on Wednesday
between negotiators for the Acadia University Faculty Association
and the University’s Board of Governors. The agreement is subject to
ratification by both parties.
Since May, the Board
negotiating team and the Acadia Faculty Association have been
meeting regularly to establish a new collective agreement. The new
tentative agreement was achieved quickly and with a common spirit of
cooperation. "We had strong teams that took a problem-solving
approach, focusing on what was best for Acadia,” said Faculty Chief
Negotiator Dr. Soren Bondrup-Nielsen.
“We believe this
agreement addresses the needs of both parties,” said Vice-President
Academic Dr. Michael Leiter. “We believe strongly it will position
Acadia very competitively for the future, attracting and retaining
the best and brightest scholars from around the world.”
The agreement includes
changes in several articles, including salary increases over the
next three years of 4%, 3.25% and 3% respectively in addition to the
grid step increases related to length of service to Acadia. The
agreement also includes restructuring to librarian salary grids to
recognize regional pay levels as well as an increase to the Travel
and Professional Allowance Fund in 2004 and 2005. There is also an
increase in the minimum number of filled full-time faculty
positions.
The agreement contains
a new intellectual property clause which makes it easier for faculty
to protect and commercialize their work. It also strengthens the
ability of the Office of Technology Transfer and Innovation to work
with faculty on these issues.
The faculty agreement culminates
what has been a banner year for Acadia. For the 9th consecutive
year, Acadia has been ranked by Canada's opinion leaders as the best
overall, primarily undergraduate university as reported in Maclean’s
opinion survey. Admission targets for September have been achieved
and the University residences are fully subscribed. These positive
indicators are a tribute to the substantial contribution Acadia
faculty make to one of Canada’s premiere post-secondary
institutions.
