New Student Enterprise Centre for Acadia University

For Release: October 21 , 2002

(Wolfville, NS) -  Acadia University students are about to demonstrate their true entrepreneurial spirit, as the Acadia Centre for Small Business and Entrepreneurship's new student enterprise centre, "Enterprise Acadia" holds its grand opening October 21st to October 25th.

"It's important for students to realize that there are an abundance of new resources and other services within Acadia's new Enterprise Centre that are easily accessible and can really support the development of their future careers," says Acadia student and Enterprise Acadia Coordinator Jil Eisnor.

The week-long opening begins today at 4:00 p.m. with an opportunity to meet staff and tour the office in Willett House. Tuesday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m. features a Speaker Spotlight in Huggins Science Hall, Room 10, with four young entrepreneurs speaking on starting their own small business. Presenters include; Dave Eisnor, Halifax Backpackers Hostel; Jenn Smith, The Clay Ground; Robb Lepper, Rewind Records; and Brian Haines, Haines Advertising.

Other highlights include a session entitled Home Based Business on Wednesday, October 23rd at 7:00 p.m., at the Old Orchard Inn. On Thursday, as part of United Nations Day, Stephanie McCandless Reford of the UN will present a lecture entitled Global Youth Leadership Training Initiative at the K.C. Irving Environmental Science Centre. The grand opening ends on Friday, October 25th with the unveiling of the Entrepreneurial Co-op Program at 2:30 p.m. at Enterprise Acadia, Willett House.

The newly announced entrepreneurial co-op option gives Acadia Co-operative Education students the exciting opportunity to be self-employed. Students learn how to develop an entrepreneurial strategy and access the resources they need to create their own opportunities, while receiving valuable guidance and support from representatives of the Acadia Centre for Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

Enterprise Acadia is funded through the John Dobson Foundation and is part of the Entrepreneurial Skills Development program of the Acadia Centre for Small Business and Entrepreneurship. The establishment of this new drop-in centre has transformed a basic meeting room in Willett House into a modern entrepreneurial learning centre. Its goals are to serve the student population of Acadia University and provide assistance to all students interested in small business startup and the field of entrepreneurship. This new student centre is an initiative of ACSBE, a not-for-profit organization that is affiliated with Acadia University and offers entrepreneurial programming in Hants, Kings and Lunenburg Counties.
