Acadia Athletics takes on new look

For Release: May 2, 2002

(Wolfville, NS) -  Based on a long-range examination of the complement of varsity programs in which Acadia Athletics competes, the department is introducing a new look for September 2002.  Women's rugby and women's cross-country will receive varsity status.  Men's soccer will no longer be part of the varsity complement. Acadia will now compete at the varsity level in women's soccer, women's rugby, men's football, women's basketball, men's basketball, women's cross-country, women's volleyball and men's ice hockey.  Acadia will continue to develop its active club and intramural program.

The new complement is based on Acadia's desire and efforts to achieve gender equity in varsity sport offerings, to win regional and national championships in those sports, and continuing efforts to recognize the benefits and personal development students achieve from varsity, club and intramural competition.

"To compete at a championship level in 10 or 12 varsity sports at an institution with fewer than 4000 students in a small community is just not practical," said Dan McNally, Acadia's athletic director.  "We believe that all of our athletes should feel that they can be successful at the appropriate level of competition and we are taking the first step in the process to ensure an effective and satisfying sports program."

"We also consider it important to create equity with regard to the number of opportunities we provide for men and women. Over the past several years, our programs have not provided enough opportunities for women. This reorganization of Acadia Athletics provides equal varsity opportunities for men and women based on Canadian Interuniversity Sport playing regulations," said McNally.

With over 2400 students participating, Acadia's varsity, club and intramural programs are an integral component of student life at Acadia and the University wants to ensure that all students have the opportunity to enjoy athletics at a variety of appropriate competition levels.  The skills developed through competition enrich the students' lives and enhance the university experience.
