Part-time faculty at Acadia reject 22 percent salary increase

For Release: June 27, 2002

(Wolfville, NS) -  Conciliation talks between Acadia University's Board of Governors and the Acadia University Faculty Association (AUFA) fell through today. Conciliation Officer Darrell Foley was unsuccessful in getting the two groups to reach their first Collective Agreement for part-time faculty at the University.

The University has an exceptional salary offer on the table, which would see the amount paid for a part-time course increase from $5,900 to $7,200 for a total salary increase of 22 percent. However, part-time faculty representatives refused to move on their own proposals and rejected the University's offer this afternoon.

The University felt it had met most of the Union's demands, including a commitment to provide the computing facilities required by part-time instructors and to recognize seniority in the hiring process.

A strike by this group would have only a slight impact on the delivery of academic programs at Acadia this fall. Part-time faculty at Acadia represent a small component of the total teaching staff. In the 2001-02 academic year, part-time faculty taught only 7% of courses delivered.

The next step in the negotiation process is to await the Conciliator's final report.
