Acadia
Board strikes committee to report on financial aid
For Release: November 12, 2002
(Wolfville,
NS) - At the annual meeting of Acadia's Board of
Governors, Board members received a comprehensive report on
Financial Aid prepared by the Acadia Students' Union.
The Acadia Students'
Union and the University Senate had requested the Board to strike a
committee to look at all aspects of student financial assistance at
Acadia University. In a unanimous vote, the Board of Governors
struck a seven-person committee, including students, faculty and
administrators, chaired by the University's Provost to look at all
of the issues.
"Financial assistance
for university study is a serious matter and one that is clearly
important to students at Acadia University. I would like to
congratulate the student leadership for bringing this issue to the
Board and look forward to a thorough review of this matter as the
year progresses," said George Bishop, Chairman of Acadia's Board of
Governors.
Provincial funding to
Nova Scotia universities was the same in 2002 as it was a decade
ago. With only two major sources of revenue: government grants and
student fees, universities have been forced to raise tuition to
address rising operating costs. The retention of talented faculty
and staff requires increases in salaries. The cost of journals, lab
equipment and utilities has all risen dramatically. The resulting
increases in tuition have created additional financial pressures for
students and their families.
The student report
recommends increased funding for student assistance, guaranteed
entrance scholarships, a fundraising campaign focused on student
assistance and a percentage of each tuition increase allocated to
student aid. The committee will review the recommendations and
report back to the Board of Governors at its February meeting.
