$1 million
donation for Acadia's Residence Advantage Initiative
For Release: October 25, 2002
(Wolfville,
NS) - The Sir James Dunn Foundation of Saint John, New
Brunswick has made a generous $1 million donation toward the
establishment of Christofor Hall at Acadia University. Christofor
Hall is part of the first phase of the Residence Advantage
initiative, a $70 million plan that will see the transformation of
residence life at Acadia with the complete modernization of the
University's existing residences and the construction of new
residences.
"The Foundation felt
it was important to support Acadia at the start of their Residence
Advantage initiative, to help ensure that Acadia students enjoy a
positive residence experience," said Michael Doyle,
Secretary-Treasurer, The Sir James Dunn Foundation.
The newly named
Christofor Hall was renovated in the summer of 2001. The building
has double and single rooms, including private washrooms, to provide
increased living space for the residents. "Residence Advantage is a
key element of Acadia's plan to ensure that we meet the high
expectations of our students," said Dr. Kelvin Ogilvie, President
and Vice-Chancellor of Acadia University. "We are very pleased to
acknowledge this leadership gift for Residence Advantage from one of
Atlantic Canada's leading philanthropic foundations and one that has
played a key role in helping to build our postsecondary
infrastructure."
Christofor Hall is a
component of Acadia's first residential college. The structure of
the residences enables Acadia to develop distinctive residential
regions of small collegiate communities. Commonly known as colleges,
these residential communities are popular on university campuses
such as Oxford and Cambridge. Christofor Hall, Eaton House, Chipman
House and a new residence scheduled to open in 2003 will comprise
the first residential college for approximately 400 students. Within
this college there will be a commons building that will host club,
recreation and fitness activities.
Christofor Hall will
be officially dedicated on Saturday, October 26th in recognition of
Lady Dunn who was known as Christofor to her family and friends. She
was one of Canada's most prominent and selfless philanthropists,
whose support of animal welfare, cultural and educational projects
has done much to improve the lives of countless young Canadians.
An important aspect of
Acadia's tradition of excellence is its commitment to student
development; both academically and extra-curricularly. This
commitment, exemplified by the acclaimed Acadia Advantage program
extends to residence life and the Residence Advantage initiative
will ensure that Acadia students continue to enjoy an enriched
campus experience.
