Acadia
University announces over $300,000 in need-based assistance
For Release:
March 15, 2002
(Wolfville,
NS) - Acadia University recognizes that many academically
qualified students living in Nova Scotia face challenges funding
post-secondary education. To this end, Acadia has announced a
comprehensive program that will assist high school graduates to
attend Acadia University.
Need-based
financial assistance at Acadia University has more than doubled in
the last five years. This growth has made it possible to provide
students applying to Acadia with an indication of the assistance
they might receive during their first year of studies. Acadia
provides approximately $1.3 million in scholarships, prizes, awards
and bursaries each year. Of this, over $300,000 is dedicated to
need-based assistance. Applications for admission to Acadia have
increased 43 percent over the past three years.
Nova
Scotia students applying to Acadia will be provided with financial
aid application forms. Assessment of financial need will take place
during the application process, enabling students to know how much
assistance they will receive before they step on campus. No other
university in the region does this form of need-based assessment for
first year students. In addition to providing students with an
indication of how Acadia might assist with their funding, the
assessment will serve as a valuable planning tool, giving students
an overview of their resources and estimated expenses for one year
of university study.
“We
are delighted that we are able to extend our bursary program to
students applying to Acadia”, said Paula Cook, University Provost.
“We, at Acadia, believe that no financial aid program is complete
until it includes both merit-based and need-based components. With
the extension of this program, we are now proving Acadia’s
commitment to our students with a totally comprehensive program.”
This
announcement continues Acadia’s tradition of providing excellence
in education. Acadia
offers a value-added experience providing students with a
well-rounded university life. In addition to its dedicated faculty
and challenging curriculum, Acadia provides students with notebook
computers to use as part of their undergraduate education.
Acadia’s over 6500 Internet connections enable students to access
information at their preferred location on the campus and provide
them with the tools to face an ever-changing society. The Residence
Advantage program provides Acadia students with the finest of
accommodation and eating facilities. All of these value-added
programs have earned Acadia top rankings across all categories of
Maclean’s 2001 primarily undergraduate reputational survey.
