Ramirez to lead Soccer Axewomen

(Wolfville, NS) - Acadia University announced today that Dara Ramirez will return to her alma mater as head coach of the Acadia Axewomen soccer program.  Laura Sanders will become full-time coach for Axewomen basketball.

Ramirez brings an outstanding record of soccer accomplishments to the Axewomen.  A native of Hantsport, NS, and Acadia’s 1990 female athlete of the year, Ramirez was a key player from 1987 to 1991 on the Axewomen teams that won five straight Atlantic University Sport championships, a 1988 CIAU Silver medal and the Atlantic conference’s first CIAU national championship in 1990.

She served as an assistant soccer coach at Acadia in 1992, then joined Dalhousie in 1993, where she helped capture three straight Atlantic University Sport championships, two CIAU Silver medals and a CIAU national championship.  In 1997 Ramirez became the head coach of the Tigers, earning three consecutive Atlantic University Sport championships, a CIAU Bronze medal in 1998 and a CIAU National Championship in 1999.

Ramirez has been integral in developing programs for young players in the Valley Soccer district.  She served as head coach for the Nova Scotia Provincial Under 17 and Under 15 teams from 1994 to 1996.

In announcing the appointment, Bev Greenlaw, Acadia’s Coordinator of Varsity Athletics, said, “This is a very positive day for Acadia women’s soccer and for women’s sport at Acadia.  I am pleased that the University has been able to separate the soccer and basketball coaching roles and am confident that this will provide both programs with a better shot at excellence.  We are delighted to have been able to attract a soccer coach with such tremendous qualifications.”

“In 12 years of CIAU competition as coach and player, Dara has won 3 CIAU Gold medals, 3 CIAU Silver medals, 1 CIAU Bronze medal and 11 Atlantic University Sport Conference championships.  That has to be one of the outstanding resumes in university sport in this country.”

“I am really looking forward to leading the program at Acadia,” said Ramirez.  “I hope to build upon the program’s great tradition.  The school is dear to my heart, and I think I am well positioned to build a supportive and lasting relationship with the community soccer program as well.”
