Acadia receives International Award

(Wolfville, NS) –Acadia University was named one of North America’s leading post-secondary institutions at the fourth annual Conference on Ubiquitous Computing held earlier this year at Seton Hall University.  Acadia received the Pioneer Award that recognizes outstanding commitment to the creation of a successful ubiquitous learning environment. Acadia is the only Canadian university to receive the Pioneer Award.

This year marked a milestone for the Annual Conference on Ubiquitous Computing.  The number of colleges and universities offering ubiquitous access to computers has more than quadrupled in the past four years.  “As a result of the risks, sacrifices and commitments made by these schools, the promise of technology for the enhancement of higher education has become a reality for those institutions that have followed.  These institutions not only made investments at their own campuses, but offered counsel and discussion in the spirit of academic sharing to other campuses.  Without the pioneers, higher education would not be where it is today,” said Heather Stewart, Director of the Institute for Technology Development at Seton Hall.

“This most recent international tribute to Acadia, the Pioneer Award, recognizes the leadership and innovation of our dedicated faculty, staff and students who took on the challenge to build the Acadia Advantage Program and who have helped lead Acadia to the premier position in Canada for successful classroom innovation with benefit to all of our students,” said Dr. Kelvin Ogilvie, President of Acadia University.

Wake Forest University and the University of North Carolina were among the top American universities recognized.

At Acadia University every student and faculty member receives a notebook computer, enabling total integration of technology into the curriculum and universal access to information.  The focus of the newest Acadia advantage combines the intuitive use of technology with a commitment to the natural environment ensuring that Acadia continues to provide a relevant and exceptional education.
