For Release: July 20, 2001The new face of Acadia Residence
(Wolfville, NS) - Students, past and present have fond memories of the sites and sounds of residence life. At Acadia, Whitman House, affectionately called ‘Tully’ is known for its spacious courtyard and colourful creeping ivy while Eaton House is the place to celebrate after intramural victories. This summer the sites and sounds around these two Acadia residences include construction signs and hammering. The extensive renovations to Whitman and Eaton, which will be completed in time to welcome students in September, mark the beginning of an aggressive six-year $70,000,000 initiative that will see a transformation of residence life at Acadia University. The Residence Advantage will see a complete modernization of Acadia’s 10 existing residences and the construction of six new residences.
An important aspect of Acadia’s tradition of excellence is its commitment to student development academically and extra-curricularly. This commitment is exemplified by the Acadia Advantage program, which has expanded the classroom and library to include the extensive contours of the Internet. This commitment extends to residence life and the Residence Advantage initiative will ensure that Acadia students continue to enjoy an enriched campus experience.
Current residence buildings, with an average age of 33 years, were not designed to accommodate the lifestyles of modern students who bring with them small refrigerators, stereos and televisions. Acadia students come from over 50 different countries and Acadia is committed to supporting the varied cultural and lifestyle preferences of its students. New and renovated residences will feature shaker style furniture including wardrobes and portable nightstand/file-drawers as well as cable hook-ups, telephones and extended wire access to the Internet. The traditional look and feel of the historic campus will be maintained and enhanced by modern upgrades.
Renovations to Whitman House will enhance the unique character of the building’s exterior. Internal improvements will reflect ‘Tully’s’ traditional style and provide students with modern conveniences. Eaton House will be split into two buildings, each with façades that reflect the University’s historic architecture. The newly renovated residences will provide apartment-style units, private washrooms and emphasize single occupant rooms.
Acadia is proud to have the reputation of being the best primarily undergraduate university in the country. Transforming the current residence facilities and building new ones will enable Acadia to continue to provide the very best student services. It will also ensure that prospective students see the quality of on-campus living as an important reason for choosing to attend Acadia. And, it will ensure that Acadia University continues to rank among those institutions setting the standard for university excellence in Canada and beyond.
