Acadia welcomes new hockey coach

(Wolfville) - Acadia University announced today that alumnus Darren Burns will assume the responsibility of head coach of the Acadia Axemen hockey program beginning July 3.

Burns, a native of Brockville, Ontario, is no stranger to the Acadia hockey program.  He was a centre with the Axemen from 1990-95 and as a player has been a part of teams which had numerous achievements including three AUAA hockey championships, reaching the CIAU national finals in 1992 and earning the CIAU national championship in 1993.

As an assistant coach with the Axemen from 1995-97, Burns along with associate head coaches Mark Hanneman and Mike Alcoe, lead the Axemen to the 1996 CIAU national championship. During the same years Burns was the head instructor of Acadia’s hockey school.

“Coaching is what I want to do and I can think of no better place to assume this role than with the Acadia Axemen. I’m extremely excited and optimistic to be a part of the Acadia hockey program”, said Burns.

Since receiving a Bachelor of Physical Education from Acadia in 1995, Burns has been teaching science, physical and co-operative education at Central Kings Rural High School.  Since 1997, Burns has been assistant coach with the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

Burns has achieved national coaching certification in Hockey I Coach Level and Intermediate Level. He is currently completing the Advanced Level I program in conjunction with the Canadian Hockey Association.

The Axemen open their Atlantic University Sport regular season schedule as part of Acadia’s Homecoming Weekend on October 12th , hosting the University of Moncton.
