Acadia
sweeps Maclean's opinion polls
For Release: November 13, 2001
(Wolfville,
NS) - For the first time since the inception of
the Maclean’s reputational survey, one university has been
noted as the best in all categories of the primarily undergraduate
category. Acadia is the first university to top the list in all four
categories: highest quality, leaders of tomorrow, most innovative,
and best overall, in the Maclean’s annual universities
issue, released yesterday.
Acadia
placed ninth in the national reputational ranking that compares all
47 universities surveyed and is the only Atlantic university in the
top 10.
As
part of the reputational survey, Maclean’s canvasses more
than 7000 people from across Canada. Those surveyed include high
school guidance counsellors, university officials, corporate
recruiters and CEO’s of leading Canadian Corporations.
"We
have a vision for the future that will ensure that Acadia University
continues to rank among those institutions setting the standard for
university excellence in Canada and beyond and we think the opinion
leaders across the country can see that," said Dr. Kelvin
Ogilvie, Acadia’s President & Vice-Chancellor.
In
this year’s rankings, Acadia was fourth among the 21 primarily
undergraduate universities. Acadia’s ranking remained solid in
very significant areas, including average entering grade, faculty
with PhD’s and students receiving external awards.
Maintaining
an average entering grade of over 81 percent for the last six years,
and increasing the proportion of students who graduate by over five
percent from last year, is a direct reflection of Acadia's continued
commitment to its students through a focused, proactive retention
program.
Acadia's
success in providing an atmosphere where students thrive is
reflected in a 43 percent increase in applications over the last
three years. Full-time undergraduate enrolment has been fixed at
3700 students.
Building
on the success of the Acadia Advantage Program, the University has
engaged itself even further in its strategic planning. Recent and
exciting developments for the University’s future, include a new
Campus Master Plan, which will guide the University's topographical
development over the next century, a $70,000,000 residence project,
the construction of the Irving Project: Environmental Sciences
Research Centre, Botanical Gardens and Campus Meeting Place and the
expansion of the life sciences at Acadia including a new Academy for
the Environment.
