Acadia projects another year of increased enrolment

(Wolfville, NS) - Acadia University is in the midst of an enrolment boom.  Over the last two years, applications have increased by almost 40 per cent.  Last year first-year enrolment increased over 16 per cent and Acadia is projecting a 10 per cent increase in 2000. The largest first year class in the last six years will arrive at Acadia this September.   The University residences are full and waiting lists have been created for those students wishing to live on campus.

Acadia is projecting that 14 per cent of the new students will come from over 42 different countries, which includes a large contingent from the New England States. This illustrates the University’s multicultural population and wide-reaching appeal.  Acadia continues to remain popular among students from Nova Scotia and the local area.  Incoming student Sean Smith from Middleton, NS describes his reason for choosing Acadia:  "The small class sizes, friendly students and staff, and small-town setting all contribute to a certain atmosphere that truly is unique to Acadia.  The helpfulness of the university's faculty and staff already have me feeling like an embraced member of the Acadia community."

Kim Meade, director of enrolment management, feels the increased enrolment is an acknowledgement of Acadia’s reputation for innovation.  “The success of our Acadia Advantage graduates has had an impact in demonstrating the positive results of the program.  This combined with the extensive personal contact from students, faculty and staff has helped students to recognize Acadia’s commitment to its students,” said Ms. Meade.

Despite the obvious benefits of increased student enrolment, Ms. Meade added that, “We remain committed to small class sizes, an excellent student to professor ratio and a primarily residential campus.”

Acadia University has won international recognition from the Smithsonian Institute for the Acadia Advantage program, an initiative that provides students with notebook computers, allowing them to connect to the Internet from any location on campus.  Maclean’s magazine has also ranked Acadia as the best overall, highest quality and most innovative undergraduate university in Canada.
