(Wolfville, NS) - Acadia University received $20,000 from the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce today, continuing the bank's original $150,000 commitment to the Acadia Advantage Campaign. The Acadia Advantage, a revolutionary program that incorporates computer and Internet technology into the classroom, was launched in 1996. Washington's Smithsonian Institution has since recognized the program, which provides every full-time student with a notebook computer, for its ground-breaking use of technology in the classroom.
"CIBC was an early supporter of integrating technology in the classroom," said Harvey Gilmour Director of Development at Acadia. "Our Advantage program was pioneered with the commitment of donors like CIBC. This Maritime donation is an important catalyst to increase support from others across the country," he said.
Several CIBC officials, including Kentville Branch Manager, Susan Balsor, presented Dr. Kelvin Ogilvie, President of Acadia University and Mr. Gilmour with a cheque prior to a luncheon on campus.
"As a member of the class of '74 I am proud to be here to represent CIBC, one of Acadia's major supporters," said Terry Gardiner, Director of Retail Banking for Atlantic Canada. "Acadia University continues to be one of Canada's leading universities and we are very pleased to be associated with this institution."
The class of 2000 includes the first large contingent of students who completed their entire degrees as part of the exciting Acadia Advantage initiative.
