Dr. Kelvin Ogilvie and First Baptist Church share pride in Acadia University as church celebrates 50th Anniversary

(Halifax, NS) -  On Sunday, April 16th Dr. Kelvin Ogilvie President of Acadia University joined with the congregation and several special guests to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the First Baptist Church in Halifax.

Following the loss of the First Baptist Church on Spring Garden Road, a newly constructed church on Oxford Street was celebrated on April 16, 1950 with Dr. Patterson, former president of Acadia.

Acadia University and the Baptist Church have been associated since the founding of the University. The congregation has been instrumental and a determinant in the founding of the University, supporting the university throughout its history, and sharing much of the credit for its survival and development. "Together, we should feel a great sense of pride in what we have built," said Dr. Ogilvie in his remarks to the congregation.

In marking the anniversary of the church, Dr. Ogilvie delivered a fitting tribute to the congregation. Many members are graduates of Acadia University and have been associated with the Acadia Divinity College. "This unique relationship between Acadia Divinity College and Acadia University is an important one; one which we must work to preserve," commented Dr. Ogilvie.

Many individuals who have made significant contributions to Acadia University, including the first president John Pryor, were members of the First Baptist congregation.
