Michelin continues support for Acadia University

(Wolfville, NS) –During a classroom dedication ceremony held here on November 3, the generous and continued support of Michelin North America (Canada) Inc. for Acadia University was acknowledged by faculty, staff and students of the University.

As a result of the latest gift to the University from Michelin’s Nova Scotia operations, the physical infrastructure of two former science labs have been transformed to complement the Acadia Advantage program. Supporting students from all disciplines, this new teaching space has been completely renovated with Internet connections available at every student seat. Students are now able to access the world’s electronic resources as part of the classroom experience.

“Michelin is very pleased to contribute to Acadia University. Education is a primary focus for Michelin, at our manufacturing facilities and in our corporate giving program. It’s doubly important to contribute to the area in which we live and work,” said Leon Jaklic, Michelin Waterville Plant Manager. “The leadership demonstrated by Acadia University with its Acadia Advantage program sets a standard for its students, who will be the leaders of tomorrow.”

Initiated in 1996, the Acadia Advantage program is now widespread throughout the curriculum of the University, with each student in every discipline participating in the initiative.  The reconfiguration of the Michelin classroom brings the total number of classrooms that have been completely redesigned to support the program to thirty; corporations, foundations and individuals have supported the physical restructuring of all these classrooms.

In announcing the gift of the classroom to the University, Harvey Gilmour, Director of Development said  “Acadia is grateful to Michelin, for the continued support from one of the province’s leading companies to one of the country’s leading universities.  Like most post-secondary institutions, we rely on the support of the private sector for the enhancement of our university.  Michelin has traditionally been a supporter of Acadia, and of our students, and we are pleased to be able to put their company’s name on one of our newly renovated and uniquely designed classrooms.”

Acadia is a leader in innovation and excellence in the classroom. The University provides students with instant, worldwide access to information through the Acadia Advantage program, a mobile computing initiative that offers a total immersion in the application of Information Technology to a traditional undergraduate education.
