Renaissance Woman to receive Honourary Degree in Civil Laws

(Wolfville, NS) – On October 21, 2000, the latest group of Acadia students to earn their degrees will officially become Acadia alumni.  Joining them will be honourary degree recipient, Libby Burnham, Q.C.

Libby Burnham, a native of Florenceville, NB, graduated with a BA in History and Economics from Acadia in 1960.  She went on to receive her LLB from Dalhousie in 1963, an honour that made her the first female graduate from Acadia University to graduate from law school.  A member of both the New Brunswick and Ontario bars, Burnham was appointed to the Queen’s Council (Canada) in 1992.

Driven by her political passion and concern for the rights of women, few have become more involved in their community than Libby.  From being the director of the CBC, sitting on numerous review boards, serving on the boards of many non-profit health care organizations and organizations for the advancement of women, she has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of all Canadians.  True to her Acadia roots, Libby also has been a member of the National Campaign Committee for the Acadia Advantage program, a member of the National Committee for the 1987-1992 “Acadia Contribution” campaign, and a constant organizer of Toronto and area Acadia alumni activities.

During the fall convocation, 135 Acadia students will graduate from Acadia in the faculties of Arts, Pure and Applied Science and Professional Studies, as well as from the Acadia Divinity College.
