tentative agreement(Wolfville, NS) - A tentative agreement was reached on Friday between negotiators for the Acadia University Faculty Association and the University’s Board of Governors. The agreement is subject to ratification by both parties.
Since May the Board negotiating team and the Acadia Faculty Association have been meeting regularly to establish a new collective agreement. The new tentative agreement was achieved much more quickly than in the past. This was facilitated through a common spirit of cooperation. "Both negotiating teams took a problem-solving approach that has resulted in an enhanced teaching and researching environment," said Faculty Chief Negotiator Dr. James Sacouman.
“This proposal goes a long way to attract and retain a young faculty. Acadia now has the ability to compete for the brightest faculty from across the country” said Vice-President Academic Dr. Michael Leiter.
The agreement includes changes in several articles, including salary increases over the next three years of 2.75%, 1.75% and 2.5% respectively in addition to the grid step increases related to length of service to Acadia. The salary grids were also restructured in a way that brought significant increases to faculty members at the Assistant and Associate Professor levels.
A new clause was introduced which acknowledges faculty members' ownership of intellectual property. The new wording provides a mechanism for the University to work with faculty members to market the learning technologies, which they have developed as part of Acadia Advantage initiative. Both parties also reaffirmed their support of the Acadia Advantage initiative that will reach full implementation in September.
The Board and the Faculty Association agreed on plans for continuing to enhance Acadia as a University of exceptional quality through recruiting and supporting effective and productive faculty members.
The faculty agreement culminates what has been a banner year for Acadia. Maclean’s opinion survey continues to acknowledge Acadia as the best overall, primarily undergraduate university in Canada, admission targets for September have been achieved and the University residences are fully subscribed. These positive indicators are a tribute to the substantial contribution Acadia faculty make to one of Canada’s premiere post-secondary institutions.
