Legal and regulatory issues related to food and biotechnology will be
explored. Topics such as the patenting of living material,
environmental release of genetically engineered organisms, regulation
of fisheries and other natural resources, and novel food products will
be addressed. Students will be encouraged to critically assess the
interrelationships between science, technology, and the legal/
regulatory environment. This environment is changing at an accelerating
rate and students will be exposed to such changes and shown how to
access current information.
