A political and cultural history of the region from the era or early European mercantile adventures to modern times. Emphasis is placed on the Dutch, British, and French colonial subjugation of the region. The experience of WWII and the subsequent independence of former colonial possessions led to various expression of nationalism and struggle, including the Vietnam War. The course also evaluates contemporary challenges, especially secularization, religious fundamentalism, and globalization.
