Disability/Access - Exam Accommodations

Guidelines for Students

  1. Meeting the Academic Support Coordinator:

All students with disabilities need to meet the Academic Support Coordinator, Jill Davies, as soon as they arrive at Acadia. Jill will discuss your program, university transition, self-advocacy and resources available at Acadia including exam accommodations. No accommodations can be provided until you meet with Jill to ensure that your file is active.

  2. Generally students write mid-terms with their classmates. If you require accommodations for midterms the procedure is different from that for exams and is outlined on the midterm link on this site.

  3. Informing Your Instructor

You should contact your instructor prior to any exam you are writing for which you desire accommodations.  Acadia Academic Support offers instructors the opportunity to contact students during their exams. We confirm with professors when and where you will be writing.

  4. Submitting Your Accommodation Request

Before December and April exams, you will fill in and submit an Exam Accommodation Request Form: The form is available at the Student Resource Centre reception desk in Godfrey House. All forms must be returned to the Student Resource Centre reception desk by:

    FALL SESSION: November 3, 2008
    WINTER SESSION: March 6, 2009

  5. Academic Misconduct Please be aware that any form of misconduct such as cheating will not be tolerated. Cheating consists of obtaining information or academic advantages by fraud or deceit. Examples of cheating include exchanging information with other students, or using unauthorized materials or electronic devices. Any misconduct will be reported to the instructor.

  6. Late Arrivals

Students are not permitted to enter the examination room later than thirty minutes after the scheduled start time. Students are not permitted to leave the examination room during the first half hour of exams.

  7. Questions during Exams

For the first hour of any exam, you should have access to your instructor through email. Your proctor can email your instructor. However, in some instances it may not be possible to contact your instructor during the exam.

  8. PLEASE NOTE: Exam proctors cannot provide clarifications for exam questions, unless previously arranged by Disability/Access.

  9. Mistakes, Errors, Typos in Exams

Students should read their exams through during the first hour of the exam and report any errors to the exam proctor who will try to contact the instructor.

  10. Electronic Devices

During an examination or a test, students must not have in their possession: cameras, radios (radios with head set), tape recorders, pagers, calculator watches, palm technology, cellular phones or any other communication device which has not been previously authorized.

  11. Food and Drink

Food and drinks are permitted in the examination rooms however must be used carefully as computers are nearby. All garbage is removed by students.

  12. Retaining Copies of the Examination

Once you have completed writing your exam, all exam papers, answer booklets (used or unused), answer sheets, diskettes or other exam materials must be returned to the exam proctor. Students are not allowed under any circumstances to retain exam materials.

  13. Deferrals

In the case of a medical or personal emergency, it is possible to defer an exam. Students must contact their instructor and the Registrar to arrange for a deferral. Disability/Access will only provide deferrals with the consent of the instructor. Once arrangements are made, the student can submit an Exam Accommodation Request Form. Please clearly indicate on the form that this is a deferred examination. Disability/Access will contact you to confirm the time and date of the exam.

  14. Temporary Disabilities

Students with temporary disabilities requiring examination accommodations must first meet with the Academic Support Coordinator to have an assessment of their needs and provide supporting documentation. Students must submit the Exam Accommodation Request Form as soon as possible. If Disability/Access cannot accommodate the student during final exams, a deferred examination is recommended.
